Biographie de Viola Desmond

Viola Irene Desmond est née le 6 juillet 1914 à Halifax, en Nouvelle-Écosse, au Canada. Issue d’une famille respectée, elle a grandi entourée de 10 frères et sœurs. Ses parents, James Albert Davis et Gwendolin Irene Johnson Davis, étaient des membres actifs de la communauté noire d’Halifax. Son père était barbier et sa mère était la fille d’un pasteur blanc et de son épouse, venus de New Haven, Connecticut, aux États-Unis. Inspirée par leurs exemples de travail acharné et d’implication communautaire, Viola aspirait à réussir en tant qu’entrepreneure indépendante.

Après avoir enseigné brièvement dans deux écoles ségréguées pour les élèves noirs, Viola a suivi une formation à l’école de beauté Field Beauty Culture à Montréal, l’une des rares institutions canadiennes acceptant les candidats noirs à l’époque. Elle a ensuite poursuivi sa formation aux États-Unis, à Atlantic City, New Jersey, et à New York. De retour à Halifax, elle a ouvert son propre salon de beauté, le Vi’s Studio of Beauty Culture, qui a rapidement attiré une clientèle fidèle de la communauté noire.

Réalisations et Parcours

En tant qu’entrepreneure, Viola Desmond a non seulement géré son salon de beauté, mais elle a également été une mentore pour de jeunes femmes noires en Nouvelle-Écosse grâce à son Desmond School of Beauty Culture. Elle a encouragé et inspiré de nombreuses femmes à poursuivre leurs rêves et à surmonter les obstacles liés à la race et au genre.
